NHL prop bets, market by market
NHL player props are mostly priced off two things: how much ice time a player gets, and who is in net on the other side. Both are often confirmed late, morning skate for goalies and line rushes for forward lines, so NHL prop prices move more in the last few hours before puck drop than prices in most other sports. Books also differ on how fast they react, which is why the same prop can sit at different prices across books for a while.
- Shots on goal
- The highest-volume NHL prop. Lines usually sit at 1.5, 2.5 or 3.5. Shot totals track ice time and power-play role closely, so a player moving onto or off the top power-play unit matters more than recent goal scoring.
- Points
- Most skaters are lined at 0.5, which makes the bet a simple question: does the player record a goal or an assist? The over is often heavily juiced for top-line players, so the price, not the player, decides whether it is worth anything.
- Assists
- Also usually 0.5. Assists depend on linemates as much as on the player, so line changes and injuries to a center or a power-play quarterback reprice them.
- Goals
- Usually offered as anytime goalscorer, a 0.5 line on the over only. Goals are rare events, so even good scorers land below 50%, and the margin on these prices is usually wider than on shots.
- Goalie saves
- Driven by the opponent's shot volume and by whether the goalie starts at all. Check your book's rule on what happens to a saves bet if the listed goalie does not start; it is not the same everywhere.

NHL player props FAQ
- What are NHL player props?
- Bets on one player's numbers in a single game rather than on the result: shots on goal, points, assists, goals, or saves for a goalie. Each comes with a line, such as 2.5 shots, and you bet over or under it.
- Which NHL prop markets does Gambletron AI cover?
- Shots on goal, points, assists, goals and goalie saves, compared across major US sportsbooks with each book's price set against the market's fair price (the vig removed). The NHL Model also publishes daily prop notes with its own projection and a plain-English deep read.
- Does Gambletron AI make NHL prop picks?
- No. NHL is in research mode: the model publishes projections, prop notes and Matchup Edges every day, but no NHL Official Picks are made or graded yet. MLB and NFL are the sports with Official Picks today.
- Why do NHL prop prices differ between sportsbooks?
- Props draw far less money than game lines, and NHL props depend on news that lands late: confirmed starting goalies and line combinations. Books update at different speeds, so for a while one book can be well off the others. Comparing every book's price against the fair price shows which side of that gap you are on.
- When is the best time to look at NHL props?
- After starting goalies are confirmed, usually following the morning skate. Earlier prices can be better, but you are betting before the most important input is known.
How NHL betting markets price player props
Hockey prices hinge on the goaltender. A confirmed starter changes a game's expectation more than any skater, and confirmations often arrive close to puck drop, so much of the day's line movement is simply the market learning who is in net.
Low scoring makes hockey the noisiest sport here. Most games are decided by one or two goals, which means single events - a deflection, a short-handed goal - decide outcomes far more often than in higher-scoring sports. Puck lines are set at a standard 1.5 goals rather than moving freely, so most of the pricing happens in the odds attached to that number rather than in the number itself.
What moves NHL prices
- Confirmed starting goaltenders, the single biggest input in hockey pricing
- Back-to-backs, which often mean a backup in net
- Special teams: power play and penalty kill rates drive totals
- Whether the puck line's 1.5 goals suits the game's expected closeness
