How NFL betting markets price matchups

The NFL is the most efficiently priced market in North American sports. Sixteen games a week, enormous handle and heavy public attention mean the closing line is usually a very good estimate of the true probability, and beating it consistently is genuinely hard. That efficiency cuts both ways: because the market is sharp, a book that is materially off the consensus is more likely to be wrong than to know something, and those gaps tend to close fast.

Most NFL line movement traces to injury news, particularly at quarterback, and to weather in outdoor stadiums late in the season. Numbers cluster on key values - 3 and 7 especially, because so many NFL games are decided by a field goal or a touchdown - so buying or selling half a point across 3 changes a bet's value far more than the same half point across 8.

What moves NFL prices

  • Quarterback status, which moves an NFL line more than any other single input
  • Whether you are getting the number on the right side of 3 and 7
  • Wind speed for totals in outdoor stadiums; wind matters more than cold
  • Line movement against public betting percentages, which can indicate sharp money
