How MLB betting markets price matchups
Baseball is the outlier: the starting pitcher accounts for more of the price than any single player in any other sport, so an announced or changed starter can reprice a game entirely. Listed-pitcher rules exist precisely because of this - if you bet before the starters are confirmed, you are betting a different game than the one that gets played.
The other distinctive feature is park and weather. Ballparks differ enormously in how they play, and wind direction at a few of them changes run expectation more than any lineup decision. Baseball is also the highest-variance sport per game: even a clearly better team wins only around six times in ten, so results tell you far less about whether a bet was good than they do in football.
What moves MLB prices
- Confirmed starting pitchers, and whether your bet is listed-pitcher
- Bullpen usage over the previous two or three days
- Lineup handedness against the opposing starter
- Wind direction and park factors, which drive totals more than lineups
