NHL Upset Tracker

NHL · 2 games tonight · Updated Oct 23, 11:16 PM ET

Every NHL underdog whose moneyline the NHL Model thinks is too long, with the market's price, the Model's own probability, the implied edge, and the night's goalie situation beside each flag. Hockey upsets hinge on the net more than any other input, so confirmed goalies are shown wherever we have them.

The dogs themselves — team, price, model vs fair probability, goalie situation and key factors — are behind a free account. Gambletron doesn't show the model's research flags to signed-out visitors.

How a flag is derived

The NHL Model publishes an assessment on every game's moneyline: its own probability of each side winning, the market's vig-removed fair probability, and the edge between them. For this page, the dog is the side with positive American odds (ML > 0), and a flag fires when the Model's probability on the dog exceeds the market's fair by at least 3 percentage points. The on-watch list captures smaller positive edges — often one goalie confirmation away from tipping into a flag.

The NFL Model publishes a dedicated upset report with its own flag/watch/long-shot statuses. The NHL Model doesn't ship an explicit upset report today, so this page derives the equivalent view from the moneyline assessments the Model does publish. The underlying signal — "where does the Model think the price on the dog is too long" — is the same.

Research, not a pick

The NHL Model does not publish Official Picks yet — the picks side is held back until the Model's results warrant turning it on. See the NHL Model Research page for the broader context on what the Model publishes and why Official Picks are deferred. This tracker is a research surface: the Model's view of where the market has mispriced the dog, with every flag's edge, probabilities and goalie situation exposed so a reader can disagree with it. Not a bet instruction.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NHL Upset Tracker?
A nightly list of every NHL underdog whose moneyline price the NHL Model thinks is too long. Each row shows the dog's team, its moneyline price, the Model's win probability vs the market's fair probability, the implied edge, confirmed or probable starting goalies, and the model's key factors on the matchup. Flags are derived from the model's own moneyline assessments; research, not a graded pick.
How is a flag decided?
For each game, the NHL Model publishes an assessment on the moneyline — a model probability, the market's vig-removed fair probability, and the edge between them. The dog is the side with positive American odds (ML > 0). An Upset flag fires when the model's probability on the dog exceeds the market's fair by 3 percentage points or more. On-watch sits between 0 and 3 points — enough edge to track but not clearly a flag.
Why is confirmed goalie status shown with every flag?
Because hockey hinges on the goaltender more than any other input, and starting-goalie confirmations often arrive close to puck drop. An upset flag with both nets confirmed is on firmer ground than one still waiting on either side; a flag that depends on a probable starter can evaporate if a backup is announced. The status is shown so the reader can weight the signal honestly.
Is this a bet recommendation?
No. The NHL Model does not publish Official Picks yet — the picks side of the model is held back until the record warrants it (see the NHL Model Research page for why). The Upset Tracker is a research surface: the model's view of where the market has mispriced the dog, with every flag's reasoning exposed so a reader can disagree with it. Treat it as context, not instruction.
What makes an NHL upset different from an NFL upset?
Low scoring and single-event variance. Most NHL games are decided by one or two goals, which means a deflection, a shorthanded goal, or an empty-netter changes the outcome more often than a single play would in an NFL game. The puck line is also fixed at a standard 1.5 goals rather than moving freely, so pricing happens in the odds attached to the number rather than the number itself. And the goalie input dwarfs almost everything else — a confirmed backup can move a moneyline more than any other news.
