NFL Upset Tracker

NFL · Week 7 · Updated Oct 23, 8:28 PM ET

Every NFL underdog on this week's slate, with the market's price and the signals behind an upset flag. The model's own view: three statuses (Upset flag, On watch, Long shot), the factors behind each, and the tracker's historical record on comparable flags where one exists. Published by the NFL Model and displayed by Gambletron AI.

How a flag is decided

The NFL Model looks at the underdog side of every game and weighs a short list of signals: unit-vs-unit matchup edges (a top-10 defense against a bottom-10 offense, for example), the underdog's own form on offense and defense, confirmed injuries on either side, and line movement since the market opened. When a comparable sample exists, it also weighs the tracker's own historical record on past comparable flags — not every flag has one, which is why some rows above have a tracker record and others don't.

The output is a status — Upset flag when the signals clearly favor the dog at the price, On watch when some but not all, Long shot when the price looks fair or steep — plus a plain-English finding on each factor so a reader can see the reasoning and disagree with it.

Research, not a pick

The Upset Tracker is published alongside the NFL Model's Official Picks, not as part of them. Official Picks are the graded output on the NFL Model Record page. The Upset Tracker is a different kind of output — a lens on the dog side of every game, with the model's reasoning exposed, not a graded recommendation to bet. Treat it as context, not instruction.

Why publish long shots and games where the favorite looks right? Because a tracker that only lists the games it liked tells a reader nothing about how often it declines to flag — the shape of what it does not flag is part of the evidence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NFL Upset Tracker?
A weekly list of every NFL underdog alongside the market's price and the signals behind an upset flag. Each flagged underdog shows a status (Upset flag, On watch, Long shot), the factors the model weighs (matchup edges, injuries, line movement, historical records on comparable flags), and when a tracker record exists, its own hit rate on past comparable flags. The Upset Tracker is published by the NFL Model and displayed by Gambletron AI.
Is the Upset Tracker a pick?
No. It's research. Official Picks are a separate, graded output of the model — the NFL Model Record page carries that record. The Upset Tracker is a lens on the underdog side of every game: here is the price, here is what the model notices, here is the comparable record if we have one. It is not graded as win/loss and is not meant as a bet instruction.
What does each status mean?
Upset flag — the model's signals clearly favor the underdog relative to the price. On watch — enough signals to track but not enough to flag. Long shot — the price looks fair or steep given what the signals say; shown so the entire slate is visible rather than only the model's picks within it.
What signals does the model use?
Unit-vs-unit matchup edges (a top-10 defense against a bottom-10 offense, for example), the underdog's own form, confirmed injuries on either side, line movement since open, and when applicable the tracker's own historical record on comparable flags. Each factor is listed on the game card with the finding, why it matters, and the evidence behind it.
What's the tracker record?
The tracker record is the historical hit rate of past comparable upset flags — not a bet record, but a frequency: how often the model's flagged underdogs covered or won outright over the sample it has, versus the market's expected rate. It's shown next to a flag when a comparable sample exists and omitted when it doesn't.
Where does the live tracker live?
On the NFL Matchups page — there's an Upset Tracker tab and a card inside each game's view. This page is the explainer plus a snapshot of this week's flagged underdogs; the full interactive tracker, with every signal and the line history, lives on Matchups.
Why publish long shots and games where the favorite looks right?
The whole slate is published, not just the flagged ones. A tracker that only lists the games it liked tells a reader nothing about how often it declines to flag — the shape of what it does not flag is part of the evidence.
