Closing line value: telling skill from luck

Updated October 1, 2026

Closing line value (CLV) is the difference between the price you bet and the final price before the game. Consistently getting better prices than the close is the best available evidence of skill, because it shows up far sooner than a winning record, which can take a thousand bets to separate from luck.

  1. 1.What the closing line is

The closing line is the last price before the game starts. By then the market has absorbed the injury news, the lineups, the weather and the biggest, best-informed bets. That makes it the sharpest public estimate of each side's chance, and the natural benchmark for the price you got.

  2. 2.How to calculate it

Compare the break-even chance of your price with the closing price's:

    • You took the underdog at +145: break-even 40.8%
    • It closed at +130: break-even 43.5%
    • The market moved toward your side. You got a price 2.7 points of probability better than the close.

For a cleaner number, remove the vig from the closing price first (see how to tell if a line has value).

  3. 3.Why it says more than your win rate

Win-loss records are noisy. At -110, the natural swing in win rate is about:

    • ±5 points over 100 bets: a 55% record is well within luck of the 52.4% break-even
    • ±1.6 points over 1,000 bets: the same 55% starts to look like skill

CLV measures each bet against the market's best estimate instead of waiting for results, so a real edge usually shows up in it long before it shows up clearly in wins and losses.

  4. 4.Where it is weaker

CLV assumes the closing line is sharp. That holds best in big markets like NFL sides and totals; closes on small-market props and low-profile games are less reliable benchmarks. A bet placed right at the close has no CLV to measure at all.

Common questions

What is closing line value (CLV)?
Closing line value is the difference between the price you bet and the final price before the game started. If you took +145 and the line closed at +130, you beat the close: your price implied a 40.8% chance and the close implied 43.5%.
Does positive CLV mean a bet will win?
No. CLV says nothing about one bet's result. It measures whether the prices you take are better than the market's final estimate, which over many bets is the strongest evidence that a process has an edge.
Why is CLV better than win rate for judging skill?
Win rate needs a very large sample: at -110 the natural swing is about 5 percentage points over 100 bets, so a 55% record over 100 bets is consistent with luck. CLV compares every bet with a sharp benchmark, so a real edge shows up in it much sooner.
How do I track my CLV?
Record the price you took when you place the bet, then the closing price for the same market. The Gambletron AI Bankroll Tracker does this for logged bets and reports average CLV alongside win rate and ROI.
