What line shopping is worth

Updated October 1, 2026

Line shopping means checking every sportsbook's price for a bet and taking the best one. It is the one edge open to everyone: the same bet at -105 instead of -110 needs to win 51.2% of the time to break even instead of 52.4%, and over a season that gap is often the difference between breaking even and a real return.

  1. 1.Books don't agree on prices

Every sportsbook sets its own prices and moves them on its own schedule. On any given game the spread, total and moneyline usually differ by a few cents from book to book, and sometimes by a half point. Which book is best changes from game to game and side to side.

  2. 2.A few cents changes the win rate you need

The price sets how often a bet has to win to break even:

    • -110: 52.4%
    • -105: 51.2%
    • +100: 50.0%

Moving from -110 to -105 lowers the bar by more than a full percentage point, on the same bet.

  3. 3.What it adds up to

Take a bettor who wins 52.5% of these bets, with the same picks at two different prices:

    • Always at -110: +0.2% per bet, about +$114 over 500 bets of $100
    • Always at -105: +2.5% per bet, about +$1,250 over the same 500 bets

Same picks, roughly ten times the return. For most bettors the price they take matters as much as the side they pick.

  4. 4.Half points matter too

In the NFL, more games are decided by 3 or 7 points than by any other margin, so +3 instead of +2.5, or -2.5 instead of -3, is worth more than its size suggests. Compare the number and the price together: a better spread at a worse price can still be the worse bet.

  5. 5.How to do it

Check every book you can legally use before each bet, and take the best price for that exact bet. The best price for one side is often at a different book from the best price for the other, and the comparison has to be repeated every time, because prices move.

Common questions

What is line shopping in sports betting?
Line shopping is comparing the price for the same bet at several sportsbooks and taking the best one. Because books set prices independently, the same spread, total or moneyline is often a few cents better at one book than another, which lowers the win rate needed to break even.
How much difference does line shopping make?
At -110 a bet needs to win 52.4% of the time to break even; at -105, 51.2%. A bettor who wins 52.5% makes about 0.2% per bet at -110 and about 2.5% per bet at -105, roughly ten times more from the same picks.
Is line shopping legal?
Using more than one licensed sportsbook is legal wherever those sportsbooks are licensed to operate. Which books are available depends on your state, and you must be of legal age (21+ in most US states).
Does Gambletron AI link to sportsbooks or take bets?
No. Gambletron AI shows each book's posted price side by side for comparison. It is not a sportsbook, does not take or place bets, and has no affiliate relationships with the books it shows.
