What line movement tells you

A betting line opens at a sportsbook's estimate and then moves as money arrives and information changes. Tracking that path matters more than the number alone, because where a line started relative to where it closed is one of the few observable signals about what the market learned in between.

Not all movement means the same thing. A line drifting steadily usually reflects ordinary betting volume on the popular side. A sharp move across several books within minutes — a steam move — more often reflects a large informed position or news that has not fully circulated. Movement against the public betting percentage is the case worth noticing: when most tickets are on one side but the line moves the other way, the money is not where the ticket count is.

The practical use is closing line value. If you consistently take prices better than where the line finishes, that is the strongest available evidence your process has an edge, because the closing line is the market's most informed estimate of the true probability. It is a far better measure of whether you are betting well than short-run profit, which is mostly luck over any sample you will personally experience.
